The Dew Line Concert: Climate is Culture

Patrick Watson & The Wooden Arms and Amy Millan

Koerner Hall, Toronto

Cape Farewell North America made its public debut on November 10th 2011 in Toronto with The Dew Line Concert: Climate is Culture.

Special guest Canadian indie rock singer and guitarist Amy Millan (of Stars) rocked Koerner Hall, followed by feature act, Montreal-based Patrick Watson & The Wooden Arms whose experimental musicianship; a blend of cabaret pop and classical music influences with indie rock, has been compared to Andrew Bird, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley and Pink Floyd. In 2007, Close to Paradise, Patrick Watson’s second album was awarded the Polaris Music Prize for best full length Canadian album of the year.

Our launch event was co-presented by McLuhan100, helping to mark Marshall McLuhan’s centenary. His famous quote that frames artists as harbingers of cultural change was the inspiration for the concert’s title and sums up perfectly what Cape Farewell seeks to achieve.

“I think of art, at its most significant, as a DEW line, a Distant Early Warning system that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it.”

The concert, at Koerner Hall in the heart of Toronto, included remarks by Cape Farewell founder, David Buckland and was hosted by broadcaster Laurie Brown.
